Matterport 3D Technology: The Google Maps of Real Estate

Renae | November 23, 2016 | Real Estate Technology Product Reviews The Google Maps of Real EstateGoogle Maps has become a ubiquitous tool in the world of real estate. The “street view” feature is especially useful for buyers looking for how a home looks on the outside before visiting or to do a virtual tour of the neighborhood surrounding it to check for amenities and general atmosphere.

One company Matterport is taking the concept one step further. Using a special kit of tools and software, this Sunnyvale, California-based company is putting the virtual benefits of apps like Google Maps into the hands of real estate agents and their clients to show off listings in a whole new, exciting way.

What is Matterport?

Matterport is “an immersive media technology company that builds 3D media solutions that power industries from real estate to entertainment, and everywhere in between.”

While beautiful static listing photos make a huge difference in the presentation and successful sale of a property, the company thinks that a 360-degree view will make an even bigger dent.

Part of the beauty of a virtual tour is the ability of potential buyers to have control over what they are seeing. A virtual 360-degree tour gives them the power to see all aspects of a property, including special features that a selling agent chooses to focus on, at their leisure.

Cool Features

Imagine being able to stage a house without having to pay $3,000 or more. Or providing a floor plan view that can quickly switch to a 3D view of the property.

With Matterport’s easy-to-use 360-view camera and software package, it’s super easy to do on a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop.

And for those who don’t want to invest right away in one of Matterport’s 3D Pro Cameras, you can access their network of 3D photographers in every state across the country, then upload your photos to your Matterport Cloud space through their app.

Other Uses for Matterport 3D Spaces

We’ve discussed before how to partner with home builders as a selling agent. You could definitely sweeten the partnership pot by offering to document the construction of a property they are building. Everyone loves before-and-afters, and this would be the ultimate way to capture it.

Remember how we mentioned how Google Maps lets people see aerial as well as surrounding location views? Matterport’s technology allows this, too, but in a much more realistic and friendly-looking way. Want to see what we mean? Check out this video:

You can also incorporate music of your choice to enhance the listing or fit the mood of your brand.

How to Get Started with Matterport

In our next post, we’ll go into more detail about how you can use Matterport’s hardware and software to make your first 3D virtual property tour. If you want to get started using the help of a photographer, though, here are the easy steps you can follow:

  1. Schedule photographer, select a package, enter basic property info, place your order and pay online.
  2. At your appointment, the technician will scan the property.
  3. Within one business day of your scans, your 3d scans and photos will be added to your customizable property website.

Matterport is used by both major national real estate brokerage firms and smaller local real estate outfits. Show sellers that you are committed their success and enhance listings for potential buyers both locally or out of state and check out Matterport’s services.
